About the project

Overview

The Energy Modelling for All project was created to develop energy modelling skills in under-represented groups to share knowledge through a network of contributors and learners. This project is sponsored by the UK Energy Research Council (UKERC) and facilitated by the Centre for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Surrey (CES).

Energy modelling plays a vital role in the transition to a net zero economy and contributes to energy security, with models underpinning decision-making across policy, industry and civil society. However, the energy sector remains one of the least gender diverse. This project aims to improve the participation of women in the field of energy modelling and related energy sectors, through knowledge sharing and access to resources. Therefore, it is useful to build a network with multiple resources to encourage persons from different disciplines and sectors to join energy modelling research and practical applications.

The Energy Modelling for All network is open to anyone interested in learning and developing skills in this area.

Aims

The aims of the Energy Modelling for All project are:

  • to build a network of under-represented groups including women, to engage with energy modelling from varied disciplines and industry sectors
  • Establish a platform with open learning resources to provide fun and easy methods of engaging with energy modelling tools within the peer community in the network
  • host a series of events with interactive learning tools with mentorship by energy modelling practitioners and a supportive peer community, to enable diverse groups to use energy modelling to solve practical problems.

The project will offer free in-person workshops on energy modelling at the Centre for Environment and Sustainability (CES) at the University of Surrey. The workshops will be run by academic experts with the aim of widening access to those who are under-represented in the energy modelling community.
